About

Sverre Fehn Pavilion

The Sverre Fehn Pavilion is an open and striking space, defined by large glass surfaces, light wooden floors, exposed concrete columns, and a distinctive timber ceiling that brings the room together in a clear geometric form.

The walls are largely replaced by glass, giving the space a bright and cool atmosphere, while the concrete and heavy structural elements add a sense of weight and calm. The flooring is light and warm, the columns are raw and monumental, and the glass surfaces allow for a soft, even daylight to fill the room. Outside, wild vines grow along the façade, with views towards Oslo Military Society and Akershus Fortress.

The Sverre Fehn Pavilion retains its character regardless of layout—it is spacious and architecturally distinct. It is a space where structure, light, and materials define the experience.

About Sverre Fehn

Sverre Fehn (1924–2009) was educated at the State Architecture Course in Oslo (1946–1949), the predecessor to the Oslo School of Architecture, and was strongly influenced by his teacher Arne Korsmo.

Early in his career, he worked with Jean Prouvé in Paris (1953–54), where he also encountered the modernist architecture of Le Corbusier.

A study trip to Morocco (1952–53) introduced him to simple, site-adapted architecture, which had a lasting impact on his work. Fehn combined Norwegian and international modernism, developing a highly site-sensitive architectural approach.

He gained international recognition with the Norwegian Pavilion at the Brussels World Expo in 1958, designed together with Geir Grung. His position was further solidified with the Nordic Pavilion in Venice (1962).

As a museum architect, Fehn worked on new buildings, extensions, renovations, and transformations. He designed the extension to the National Museum – Architecture (2008), known as the Fehn Pavilion. Other notable works include Villa Schreiner (1952), Villa Busk (1987–90), Hedmark Museum at Domkirkeodden (1967–79), the Norwegian Glacier Museum (1991), and the Aukrust Centre (1996).
