About Wenche Selmer
Wenche Selmer (1920–1998) graduated from the State School of Crafts and Art Industry (Statens Håndverks- og Kunstindustriskole) in 1945.
In the following years, she worked with several prominent architects, including the French architect Marcel Lods in Paris and Arnstein Arneberg in Oslo. She established her own practice in 1954.
Selmer was an influential Associate Professor at the Oslo School of Architecture (1976–1987), where she inspired and shaped new generations of architects. She renewed Norwegian timber architecture by combining modern and traditional building techniques. Her work reflects a deep understanding of nature in terms of terrain, climate, and material use.
Selmer designed architecture of high quality, often small and space-efficient buildings with open floor plans, carefully adapted to the landscape and the needs of the users. Throughout her career, she designed more than 120 houses, cabins and boathouses, both independently and in collaboration with Jens Selmer. She received the Norwegian Wood Award (1969) and the Sundt Award (1963).
